Renner started out as a journalist for Cleveland Scene - the alternative newspaper here known for being a pain in the ass, and then was dismissed from said paper for being too much of a pain in the ass. So, it's kind of in his bailiwick to screech and point loudly at said offender when anyone may dare even scuff his Puma, so to speak.
FWIW, I love Search Party (although I haven’t seen the last season yet). I was leery of trying it because I hated Girls so much and it was initially compared to that show. But SP is twisty (sometimes loses its way) and judgmental of society without getting preachy. Early is truly *chef’s kiss*. It’s one of those shows that made me laugh more inside than out but I still thought it was swell.
I also read The Atlantic piece and listened to the NPR podcast (Un)Resolved, which had information I didn’t know about Emmitt Till. His boyhood home should be some kind of museum/memorial to the harm of racism. Reading again about defacing markers and signs related to his murder remind me that it’s even more important to make non-white views of history available to the public. If it offends the racists, then tant pis!
Oh lordy. I have not been following this latest Renner stuff, but given that I am a native North Carolinian I had to click through to see what was up with this restraining order while on vacation thing. Lo and behold he vacations on the same part of the NC coast my family does (it wasn't me, promise!). Not a surprise as the area seems to draw tourists in high proportions from Ohio and Pennsylvania if my informal surveying of license plates while there in June is any indication! I read his book after SDB's review and I wasn't mad at it, but the guy is just a lot.
I'm so glad you are watching and enjoying Search Party! It's a delight. I think about Elliott and Portia's perfection on a daily basis.
My memory is sketch but these are the things I recall making me cringe about the MM book: 1. the weird porn-mag details about MM’s dad (IMO he seems like a classic East Coast Catholic Sad Dad, let the man grieve, he’s a suffering alcoholic for chrissakes, etc.) (but what do you think about the dad?); 2. Renner’s grandiose theory that he himself fits the criteria of a psychopath. Dude come on; 3. Renner glossing over MM’s ex-boyfriend as a potential dirtbag/suspect. He really gave him the “good guy” white boy treatment – so much for that sociopathic killer instinct – he can’t even recognize his own kind. I did actually like the book and I kinda like Renner as well.
