This is a True Detective-spoiler-free zone, but the fourth-season premiere reminded us to ask about your favorite Arctic-adjacent true crime. Is it the unsolved murder of Angel Carlick? Robert “The Butcher Baker” Hansen, who leveraged linkage blindness to continue his reign of terror? The Belcher Island murders? Or the “real” cases behind famous original Fargo?
Pretend I made a “cold-est case” joke here that isn’t extremely tacky, and tell us your favorite tales of crime near the poles, whether podcasts, longreads, books, or docs. - SDB
Mine is NXIVM-related: the disappearance and alleged suicide of Kristin Snyder in Alaska. Almost every article about it online is marginal (Frank Report; Daily Mail), but this Dennis Yasko article in the Times-Union has legitimate info:
As with all things that were probably orchestrated by Keith Raniere, this is so creepy. Some have alleged that Kristin, a lesbian with a life partner, was so brainwashed by ESP workshops that she let Raniere convince her to have an affair with him. Evidently he found lesbianism to be a real affront to his manhood, and he made efforts to "turn" gay women, if they were pretty enough for him. Some have said that Kristin became pregnant and that's why she killed herself by drowning in the icy water of Resurrection Bay. But there isn't a lot of convincing evidence, and her body has never been located.
I don't have a recommendation, but a request. Anyone have media that discusses cabin fever? Like the South Pole case where one guy stabbed another for spoiling every book he read?

No spoilers but TD ep 1 was pretty creepy...
