I'm getting on a plane tomorrow for the first time since 2019, transiting Toronto Pearson airport (think kind things for me and my luggage) and spending 7 hours breathing through a mask. So I'm hoarding my favourite podcasts to listen to in the air.

But... I have one audible credit I need to spend today. I'm either downloading a Kate Lister book or Men, Women, and Chain Saws, but I'll monitor this page to see if anyone has a better suggestion.

Been meaning to see if anyone else is listening to this season of Jury Duty, Kary Antholis’s podcast. Last season he did in depth coverage of the Robert Durst trial. This season he has interviews with the (spoiler alert) successful lead prosecutor John Lewin. What makes it interesting is that since Durst and the case are dead, Lewin has no reason to be at all diplomatic or hide any tactics. It’s a much more candid look at the behind the scenes decisions than we usually get so soon. The trial was interrupted by COVID which added more twists to navigate and strategize. Of course I take what he says with a grain of salt - he takes credit for forcing every bad decision by Durst and his team by setting traps all over the place. He may be right about that, maybe not, but it makes a great story and he can’t help cutting loose and throwing world class shade at Durst and his “$12 million legal team”. It is very entertaining, since I believe Durst is guilty and deserves every bad thing said about him.

Also, as Antholis warns us at the start of the episodes, the interviews largely take place by phone as Lewin is talking walks around LA beaches and hills. Imagining him walking around ranting about Bob Durst adds to the enjoyment.

The flip side is that it is easy to imagine him with the same gusto going after someone innocent. I haven’t dug into his past cases. He does like cold cases, which throws up a red flag to me.

Anyway the most recent episodes talk about his cross examination of Durst and are a good place to dip a toe and see if it’s for you. I’m just mean enough to enjoy it.
