Sweet holy jeebus! In the immortal words of Stefon, this post has EVERYTHING. Betties Broderick (old and new), Tiger King (still) and that GREAT scam reporting. I read it and was fascinated. And read the update as well. It just goes to show you that anyone can be scammed, your intelligence level is not a factor. However, I honestly think of my grandmother telling me that “there’s no fool like an old fool” and I found that to manifest throughout the story. I love Breakdown; that season’s story was heartbreaking but I could never truly make up my mind whether leaving his son in the car was an accident or not.
Every year in Texas we have umpteen reminders about not leaving children or animals in cars during the summer, every year someone breaks into someone else’s car to get a child or animal out, and every year at least one child does that way from the heat. Oh, and some dorky weatherman usually cooks an egg on the sidewalk in August. Yes, this is your brain on drugs.
I had devoured that NY mag piece when it came out but gleefully reread it again. The professor is clearly not telling the whole truth but I'm sure more details will eventually wiggle out
