Happy New Year all and congrats Dan for leveling up to contributor status! I’m hoping We Keep the Dead Close takes it for your January selection Sarah. Aside from the fact that I really liked it, I feel there is quite a bit to chew on when it comes to the structure, themes explored related to academia and institutions, and how the writer’s own story is weaved into the narrative.

Why is it that every time I see the word “butthole”, I think of the Cats movie? It has been a great year for reading BE and then heading straight here to see what the smartest of all commenters think. Thank you for being so welcoming to one of even my plebeian tastes. My economics nerdery and my true crime nerdery meet at last! The Red Market sounds like it's worth a read, it reminds me of that oft-cited behavioural econ study that people tend to be more willing to donate blood than to sell it. Once you put a price tag on something, it loses another kind of value. I'm pretty sure Bill Bryson covers the corpse-stealing rackets, as also seen in the Burke and Hare movie (which is a full "movie that doesn't exist" so really, no one saw it).

About five days too late, but I am addicted to Everything But the House, an on-line auction website. Not a promo, but a week ago, photos from the Hauptmann case were on their site for sale. I believe the four photos sold for $75. Anywhoos, Happy new year! I'm sure this one will provide as much grist for the true crime mill as the last.
