I feel like I've read a lot of these hand wringing pieces about true crime in the last couple months and none of them have really landed with me as getting to the core of the issues. Maybe because even though I'm a woman who truly loves alcohol and true crime I don't listen to the podcasts branded around that (this article was somewhat of an improvement I thought just because the author actually seems to listen to the things she's writing about) and those are the ones that take up paragraphs upon paragraphs.
I was interviewed for the Vanity Fair story. The author is a big fan of murder-as-entertainment shows and I think she wrote a piece without doing any real digging to see what else is out there. I urged her to look at social justice pods, which regularly cover police brutality, racism, etc., but my suggestion fell on deaf ears. No surprise that I wasn't quoted LOL!
