The first time I read Go Ask Alice, I was little. Really little. 2nd grade, so 7 years old at most. I got it out of the yard sale box of paperbacks we had in the garage. I knew absolutely nothing about drugs or sex, but I was absolutely fascinated with teenagers, especially Brady Bunch and Partridge Family-era teens. I loved it. I couldn't wait to grow up and run away. I put it on my shelf behind other books, because I suspected my mom would be mad that I had it. Then I read it again in 8th grade. I was still pretty sheltered, but I had endured 6 additional years of Catholic school, After School Specials, and other parental propaganda. But... still loved it! For different reasons. That time I thought it was hilarious, because it was so fake. I read it once more, in high school, when I was finally the narrator's age. That's when I stopped loving it. It just depressed me. I put my copy in the take-a-book pile at the library. (But if there is a book club for it, I will definitely read it again.)

I found Martha’s Chard to be pretty middling, Bogle is my favorite cheap Chardonnay. The Snoop Cali Red is too sweet for me almost like bottled sangria, but the Rose is close to a white Zinfandel- nice and strawberry fruity. The Banished is my favorite of their reds.

I propose a new lowest rating on the five-star scale: Fucking Bongos.

Ok I have to confess to reading Go Ask Alice as a very young (also very sheltered) teen and thinking it was real. But it was also the era of all the "dying teen" movies of the week so I think I was just not inclined to be too critical. It did seem slightly "after school special" and I didn't think she was actually writing as it happened but maybe remembering and thus editorializing as a result of distance.

I guessed Aunt Diane for the footnote,.as it was exactly what came to mind reading that passage.

Again, there’s so much good here that it’s practically scary. To prepare myself for Toby’s Deep Dive, I listened to Leah Sottile’s book last week and gave it a big thumbs up. Hoping I can attend the taping to hear what the experts think. I’ll say no more, other than to encourage folks to read/listen. (You can pick your booze of choice.)

I watched the TV movie as a companion activity to reading Emerson's book, and was kinda surprised how not awful I thought it was. I'm of an age where I should have remembered the movie existed, but didn't; it was a lot easier to be unaware of stuff back then, and for sure it would have been something my parents wouldn't have promoted in any way.
