I picked up a copy of Hell in the Heartland from the library and it's next in my queue. I'll let you know how it is!

Again, you guys are outdoing yourselves with these recommendations. I wanted to give a thumbs up to The Murders at White House Farm, which I ended up enjoying. (A little bit too many sorrowful looks at lone, lorn farm fields.) I thought it was beautiful, atmospheric and well-acted. Freddie Fox looked amazingly like Jeremy Bamber when I finally did some Googling. Since I had just seen him being silly with Matt Berry in The Year of the Rabbit, I wondered whether he could be chilling enough - the answer is yes. BTW, anyone heard of the documentary called Tread, on Netflix? I read about it on Reddit, and am inclined to check it out. Also listened to the first episode of Tom Brown's Body, and I'm in for the long haul there. Thank you for causing me to get another pair of earbuds, since I am now listening to stuff you've recommended to me nearly every day when not on calls.

Honestly I think you gotta read Hell in the Heartland - terrible name, but then the generic Lost Girls put me off reading Kolker's book at first. This is NOT AT ALL in that quality but the writing averages out as fine over the whole length and the story itself is so astounding, particularly the egregious incompetence of the cops and the efforts of the mother. Agree with first impression below that parts of it are overwritten- tries too hard to be capote among the meth heads - but that does drop off as it gets into the actual narrative so push through the first few chapters.
