Also, here's that Dershowitz article from the New Yorker, which was excellent/enraging: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/08/05/alan-dershowitz-devils-advocate

I am traveling, so there’s no binge watching, but I’m continuing to plow through the NYT best-true-crime-books-by-state article. I’m currently reading Midnight Assassin, having finished the infuriating Give A Boy A Gun. I enjoyed Furious Hours - I was going to suggest it to Toby Ball for an upcoming book group discussion. Also finished listening to the Let’s Taco Bout True Crime episode discussing the Crime Junkie plagiarism issue. I didn’t realize how many programs Crime Junkie had stolen directly from. But mostly I’m eating & drinking in Colorado!!

I'll be interested to hear what you think about the rest of Gangster Capitalism. I do think there's a lot of gaming that goes on at all levels, but participating in/enabling fraud in test-taking and applications is where this case crosses the line for me. I'd also have liked the host to critique the interviews rather than let them stand as is. (caveat I am higher ed faculty with no connection to admissions or sports so this case hits close to home). Since I've done a lot for my job this weekend, I'll relax by reading Midnight in Chernobyl and The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist.

Just watching a Dateline circa 2009 where Keith Morrison is discussing a Canadian couple’s stolen sex toys. Business as usual 😂

We’re finally finishing “Mindhunter” over in Best Evidence’s SF HQ (my husband got into it and slowed my roll). I think I’m into it! I’m also catching up on the Reply All podcast two-parter from a couple weeks ago on how crappy the NYPD computer system is. Finally, I’m catching up on six months of Wired magazines and each issue has at least one really great tech-based crime yarn! I’ll drop links to those stories in upcoming Best Evidence issues. - EB

Trying to stay out of the heat so I don't commit any crimes myself. Might dive into Mindhunter, Season II later (has to finish Glow Season III first) but whenever I have a three-day weekend, the real crime is that I usually spend it processing (i.e. cleaning) my house. Gangster Capitalism was an excellent pod. Eagerly awaiting a follow up.

My weekend plans got a bit de-railed by having to get four stiches in my palm (not crime related). My husband and I did start Mindhunter Season 2 (love Bill Tench and love what they are doing with BTK). Reading wise, I finished Norco '80 which was a wild, enjoyable read. I also made progress on The Castle on Sunset by Shawn Levy which a pretty dish-y take on Chateau Marmont history.

Not a long weekend for me but yesterday I binged the whole new season of Unravel, the ABC’s (Australian one, not US one) true crime podcast - a good listen for those of us endlessly fascinated with con artists and/or goofy Kiwi slang.
