Many thanks to Eve for covering for me last week! You were in good hands — but I missed y’all. Let’s get back into it.
First, though, let’s have a look at Wikipedia’s master list of Oscar nominees (and short-listees) in the feature-doc category. I keep meaning to put together a B.E. side list of genre documentaries pulled from this list, so let me know if that’s of use!
Definitely of use: friend of Best Evidence “Smooth Joey Apollo” Reid’s ranking of every nominated film from this year’s Academy Awards. — SDB
*NB: This was written before the presentation of Best Documentary Feature got quite so exciting…
The crime
John Ruffo, set to self-surrender after he got caught defrauding more than half a dozen banks of $353 million, up and vanished like a fart in the wind (tm Shawshank) in November of 1998.
The story
Alas, Ruffo’s lamming it is really the only comprehensible aspect of his criminal enterprising in ABC and Hulu’s joint docuseries project, Have You Seen This Man?, and that’s only because a guy ditching out on a prison sentence for the better part of a quarter century is pretty straightforward. Like, there’s not a lot to “Ruffo disappeared and the Marshals have to date not found him” is not complicated.
