Quickie comment on the Chicago “Race Riots” as then-known: apparently my grandfather was a part of the Civil Defense team that was about to support white citizens. He turned to walk down a Chicago alley, and came upon a Black woman who had been killed - disemboweled. He turned around and went home, believing this was not what he signed up for. He was no anti-racist leading light, but was honestly horrified about what was being done to the Black community. I’m always correcting people who still refer to Tulsa as a riot: it was a straight-up massacre, and needs to be taught in schools.
Great review of the Pierre book, I feel like the pendulum is still swinging away from the often-noxious "lovable rogue" trope.
