I’m thinking that there’s basically no way The Staircase can live up to the hype. I’d love it to be like People vs OJ or The Act, but I just don’t see it. When you strip away all of Peterson’s blowharding and navel-gazing, there’s not much ‘there’ there. I don’t see the lawyers in this case being as compelling to follow as those in TPvOJ, and how much mileage can you get out of the Peterson family in a dramatic adaptation? The rules of scripted narrative are different than documentary, and I don’t think that’s going to work in the adaptation’s favor.

Frankly, as much as I love Mr. Darcy, I’m still annoyed that John C. McGinley wasn’t cast as Michael Peterson. Talk about a dead ringer.
